Nadia Arandjelovic-Laws

What area of business are you in?

Communications, PR and Media Consulting

How did the idea for your business come about? Or what sparked a change in your current business?

I’d been working as a journalist full time since graduating from university in 2009 and while I enjoyed it, felt ready for a new career, one that offered me time flexibility and financial freedom. Then one day I got an idea for how I could use my skillset to become my own boss.

What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them?

Finding clients and gaining trust especially as a young professional competing against industry vets nearly twice my age. I overcame this through hard work and doing my best with each client. Working in the beginning for low rates, until I felt confident I could charge my worth.

Anything you would do differently in hindsight?

My business was not an overnight success. I’ve grown organically over time, and while there were mistakes along the way, I don’t have any regrets. Each misstep was a lesson and I’ve always operated with as much integrity as possible.

What would you say was the single most influential factor in your business success?

I’ve learnt many new skills as an entrepreneur – most of which weren’t important in my nine to five. One is how to value myself and my work; to approach everything I do with a positive mindset; and learning from every so-called failure. Believing in myself was the key ingredient.

What advice would you give to an upcoming entrepreneur locally or internationally?

Start small, but dream big. They say don’t despise humble beginnings and I agree. Take it one step at a time when growing your business, but also keep your eyes focused on the bigger, end goal. We all want the large salary/ exciting title, but great character is important also.

Which product or service you offer that you are you most proud of?

We’ve always searched for ways to give back to non-profits/ small businesses in need of PR support. Now, for every ten hours of corporate work we do, we give an hour of time pro-bono to local charities. Our desire is always to give back and make a positive difference.

Have you worked with me before? If so, how have I helped?

While assisting a client, Bermuda Economic Development Corporation, I was able to work with Keeon in setting up their new website. It turned out great and the team was extremely happy. I’ve also worked with Keeon in my past life, as a reporter for The Royal Gazette.

How would you describe your Instagram page and what do you hope to achieve with it?

I use Instagram more personally, than professionally. I post about various life milestones, including lots of photos with my husband and two month old son, Zaccheus. Also food and travel both make up a large chunk of my photos – really, it’s just a collection of things I love.
